Vallejo's Capitol Stairs Need City Maintenance

11 June 2026 15:22

Volunteers who restored Vallejo's historic Capitol Stairs are asking the city council to fund regular maintenance as their group ages out. - The stairs were restored with mosaic art and structural work in 2021 after eight years of effort.

- Volunteers, many in their 70s, can no longer handle upkeep; a $360/month contract is proposed. - The stairs are a key tourist attraction, similar to San Francisco's 16th Avenue steps.

- The city previously provided nearly $300,000 for restoration, but ongoing care is needed. The petition highlights the need for city-funded maintenance to preserve this historic gateway to Vallejo's Heritage District.
