Trump Council Proposes Major FEMA Overhaul

07 May 2026 13:15

A council appointed by President Trump has recommended sweeping changes to FEMA, including raising the threshold for federal disaster aid, giving states more control over funds, and simplifying survivor assistance. These changes would shift more responsibility to states and could reduce federal disaster costs.

The report estimates that 29% of past disasters would not have qualified under the new criteria. Critics warn that rural and poor communities may suffer without adequate federal support.
