The Inyo Mountains of California hold a history of industrial mining centered on a valuable deposit of dolomitic limestone. Discovered in 1862 near Swansea, development waited for the Carson & Colorado Railroad in 1883.
The Inyo Marble Company began quarrying in 1885, later succeeded by Premiere Marble Products in 1959. The dolomite marble was used in terrazzo flooring, roofing, landscaping, and chemical filters.
Today, remnants of the quarry operations, railroad spurs, and structures offer a glimpse into this chapter of Inyo County's economic past.
