Shasta County voters to consider election reform measure

28 May 2026 09:18

Shasta County voters will decide on Measure B, a citizens' initiative that would require hand-counting of ballots, in-person voting on a single day, and voter ID. Opponents argue it violates state and federal laws and will lead to costly lawsuits.

Supporters say it protects election integrity. The measure is on the June 2 primary ballot.

- Measure B would require hand-counting of all ballots, which opponents say is costly and impractical. - It would eliminate most mail-in voting, allowing it only for the infirm, military, and overseas citizens.

- Voters would need to show ID at polling places, similar to a statewide measure in November. - Former registrar Cathy Darling Allen warns of legal challenges and high implementation costs.

The outcome could set a precedent for local election laws in California.
