Serene Lakes Home First in Truckee Region to Earn IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home Designation

03 June 2026 05:36

A home in Serene Lakes has earned the IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designation, the first in the Truckee region. The designation requires essential mitigations like Class A roofing, noncombustible gutters, and a 5-foot noncombustible zone.

The homeowner, Chase Cambron, lost his previous home in the 2017 Tubbs Fire and took extensive steps to protect his new property. Truckee Fire Protection District offers free evaluations and rebates to help homeowners achieve the designation.

- The home features a metal roof, block masonry first floor, ember-resistant vents, and extensive tree thinning. - IBHS requires Class A roofing, noncombustible gutters, ember-resistant vents, and a 5-foot noncombustible zone.

- Truckee Fire provides free defensible space evaluations, home hardening rebates up to $2,000, and reimburses the IBHS application fee. - Community-wide action is critical, as home-to-home ignition caused most losses in recent wildfires like the Camp Fire and Palisades Fire.

The designation marks a key milestone in building a wildfire-resilient Truckee region, with officials urging all homeowners to participate.
