30 May 2026 17:38

San Diego State University has deployed over 1,300 AI-enabled surveillance cameras across its campus, including in dorms and common areas, as part of a $1.3 million upgrade. - Cameras are located in 18 of 24 residential buildings, with 28% of all cameras in dorms.

- The Avigilon cameras have facial recognition and behavior analysis capabilities, but officials say they are limited to motion detection. - Student Sophia Pomponio called the monitoring a "heinous violation of students' privacy." - SDSU is one of only two CSU campuses using AI-powered cameras, reflecting a national trend.

The university does not plan to add signage about camera locations, citing public safety concerns.
