San Diego Central Jail deadliest in county, report finds

A new report reveals that San Diego Central Jail is the deadliest facility in the county, accounting for half of all jail deaths over 12 years. - 91 of 179 inmate deaths occurred at Central Jail from 2011 to 2024.

- The facility had 12 of 15 homicides and the highest staff assault rate. - Overcrowding and understaffing increase death risks; more supervisors reduce them.

- Suicides and accidental deaths are most common within the first two days of booking. The report recommends better screening for intoxication and focusing prevention efforts on Central Jail and Vista Detention Facility.
