The Modoc National Forest has set dates for the reopening of its obsidian collection areas after a seasonal closure. The mines will reopen for collecting on July 1, 2026, with the season running through August 31.
Free permits will be available starting July 1 at the Forest Supervisor's Office in Alturas, CA. There is a daily limit on permits and a maximum of three permits per person per season.
