Oakland residents oppose lifting I-580 truck ban

29 May 2026 15:08

Residents of Oakland are strongly opposing a Caltrans study that could lift a decades-old ban on heavy trucks on Interstate 580. The ban, in place since the 1960s, has kept big rigs off the highway, but the state is considering changes to reduce pollution on other freeways like I-880.

- Nearly 200 residents attended meetings, expressing frustration and opposition. - Concerns include increased collisions, pollution near schools and hospitals, and inequitable impacts on communities of color.

- The study includes traffic, air quality, noise, and racial equity assessments, expected by year's end. - Some residents support the study for its potential to provide data, but most oppose lifting the ban.
