Oakland Officials Celebrated SCOTUS Homeless Ruling

18 May 2026 15:02

Internal communications obtained by The Oaklandside reveal that high-ranking Oakland city staffers celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the Grants Pass case, which allows cities to ban sleeping in public and camping on sidewalks and parks, even when no shelter is available.

The ruling overturned a previous federal appeals court decision that required cities to offer shelter before clearing encampments. Key officials, including Jestin Johnson and LaTonda Simmons, expressed excitement about the decision, with Johnson saying he was "excited about us being able to take the handcuffs off." The city subsequently adopted a more aggressive approach to homeless encampments, with Mayor Sheng Thao ordering accelerated sweeps and pressuring staff to clear camps.

The records also show that city staff faced pressure from the Governor's office and developers to address encampments, including those near the home of former NFL player Marshawn Lynch. The ruling has significant implications for homeless policy in Oakland and across California.
