A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the North Coast early Wednesday morning, followed by a 4.5 aftershock. - The first quake hit about 15 minutes before 6 a.m., 40 miles off Petrolia.

- A 4.5 aftershock occurred at 6:11 a.m. off Ferndale.

- Early reports of shaking came from Arcata and Ferndale. The USGS continues to monitor the area for further activity.
