Marine Mammal Center Urges Beachgoers to Give Harbor Seal Pups Space This Season

26 May 2026 07:20

The Marine Mammal Center is urging beachgoers to give harbor seal pups space this spring and summer to prevent mother abandonment. - Harbor seal mothers leave pups alone on beaches while foraging; a lone pup is usually not abandoned.

- Last year, over 235 marine mammals were affected by human or dog disturbance, with half of Marin County cases being severe. - Beachgoers should keep at least 50 yards away and keep dogs leashed.

- Call the rescue hotline at 415-289-SEAL if an animal shows signs of injury or distress. The center emphasizes that giving animals space is the best way to help them thrive in the wild.
