Caleb Grant, a man with multiple prior vehicle theft convictions, has been charged with two additional alleged thefts in Oakland. The charges include felony counts of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, and carrying a loaded gun in public, as well as misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and possessing marijuana for sale.
- Grant remained hospitalized at his first court appearance on May 28 and was released without bail by Judge Thomas Reardon. - Police allege Grant tried to pull out a gun during a traffic stop, then accelerated, dragging an officer into his car, leading to the officer shooting Grant.
- A gun found in Grant's car was reported stolen in a 2025 Oakland home burglary, and a large quantity of marijuana and cash were also found. - The shooting was the second involving Oakland officers in three weeks, with four other reported shootings since February 2023.
Grant is next due in court on June 12.
