28 May 2026 14:10

Contra Costa County officials warn about the glassy-winged sharpshooter, an invasive insect found on grapevines sold at five Costco stores, including Richmond. The pest transmits Pierce's disease, which can devastate grapevines and other crops.

- The insect was found on grapevines from Burchell Nursery, distributed to Costco stores in Danville, Concord, Brentwood, Antioch, and Richmond. - Approximately 200 plants were sold before detection; unsold inventory was destroyed.

- The pest feeds on over 300 plant species and can cause significant agricultural damage. - Residents who purchased grapevines after April 21 should contact the county and not move or dispose of the plants.

The county is working with state partners and Costco to contain the infestation and urges public cooperation.
