Immigration Detainees Allege Widespread Medical Neglect in Federal Lawsuits Across 33 States

02 June 2026 08:45

An investigation by KFF Health News and The Associated Press found hundreds of federal lawsuits alleging medical neglect in ICE detention facilities across at least 33 states. Detainees report being denied medications for chronic conditions, with requests for help ignored for weeks.

The surge in detentions since President Trump returned to office has overwhelmed the system, with over 75,000 immigrants detained. DHS reported 51 deaths in detention, with suicides at an unprecedented high.

Advocates say even basic care is often denied, and court orders are sometimes ignored.
