Idle Oil Wells in Inyo County: Health Risks and Cleanup Costs

08 May 2026 13:20

A new report from the Center for Biological Diversity identifies over 30,000 idle oil and gas wells across California, including in Inyo County near Laws. These wells, many unplugged for decades, pose health risks and could cost $21.5 billion to clean up.

- Over 4,000 idle wells are within 3,200 feet of schools, parks, and healthcare facilities statewide. - Companies have provided financial assurance for only 1% of cleanup costs, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill.

- A 2020 study found 65% of idle wells surveyed were leaking methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The report calls for better monitoring and legislation to hold oil companies accountable for cleanup.
