CBS News projects that Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra will face off in November's California governor election. Hilton, a former Fox News host and UK political adviser, secured the second spot in the top-two primary, holding off Democrat Tom Steyer.
Becerra, former U.S. Health Secretary and California attorney general, surged after Katie Porter's exit.
If elected, Hilton would be California's first Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger. Key facts: Hilton served as David Cameron's strategy director; President Trump endorsed Hilton in April; several candidates including Porter, Mahan, and Villaraigosa have conceded; Hilton has criticized ballot counting delays and pledged faster results.
The race will determine the direction of California's Democratic supermajority legislature.
