Four people were charged in connection with a sophisticated cross-border drug tunnel discovered in Otay Mesa, San Diego County. The tunnel, stretching 1,933 feet from a Tijuana home to a discount store, was equipped with a rail system and ventilation.
Federal authorities seized over 1 ton of cocaine worth $45 million. The tunnel is believed to be operated by the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel.
The four defendants, aged 18 to 32, face conspiracy charges. A detention hearing is set for Wednesday.
Mexican authorities also located the tunnel entrance in Tijuana, calling the operation a direct blow to drug trafficking logistics.
