Federal Judge Blocks Alabama Nitrogen Gas Execution, Citing Cruel and Unusual Punishment

10 June 2026 05:35

A federal judge has permanently blocked Alabama from executing inmate Jeffrey Lee with nitrogen gas, ruling the method constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. The decision follows an appeals court finding that the three minutes of conscious suffocation is intolerable.

Alabama has used nitrogen gas in seven executions since 2024. The state is appealing the ruling, and the case may reach the U.S.

Supreme Court.
