A massive wildfire on Santa Rosa Island, the largest in Channel Islands history, has burned nearly 29 square miles, threatening rare Torrey Pines and unique wildlife. The fire, now contained, started May 15 and is believed to be human-caused.
Recovery efforts are underway, but the island remains closed to the public through at least June 30. The blaze destroyed historic structures and reduced habitat for species like the island fox.
