A geologist was killed in a tunnel collapse at a major water infrastructure project in Calaveras County. The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Twyla Capurro of Coulterville, who was working as an advisor on the $84 million Canyon Tunnel project.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Schell and Sonora Roads near Knights Ferry. Multiple agencies, including fire departments from Modesto and Turlock, responded to the scene.
A second individual trapped in the tunnel was rescued with minor to moderate injuries. The circumstances of the collapse are currently under investigation by authorities.
