Open Heart Kitchen (OHK), the Tri-Valley's largest nonprofit nutrition provider, has been named Assembly District 16 Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan. The recognition was presented during California Nonprofits Day on May 20 in Sacramento.
- OHK was founded in 1995 as a small interfaith effort and now serves free meals daily across Pleasanton, Livermore, and Dublin. - In 2025, OHK opened the Tri-Valley's first food bank, a 19,000-square-foot warehouse in Livermore, distributing nearly 837,000 meals in its first year.
- The nonprofit has faced challenges, including $850,000 in lost federal reimbursement and cuts to SNAP benefits, but has continued expanding services. - OHK has distributed over eight million meals in three decades, serving nearly one million meals in 2025 alone.
The recognition highlights OHK's critical role in addressing hunger and its resilience amid federal funding cuts, underscoring the growing need in the community.
