Congress votes to reopen DHS without ICE funding

30 April 2026 16:05

Congress voted to reopen key parts of the Department of Homeland Security, including TSA, after a 75-day shutdown. The bill provides no funding for ICE, a major win for Democrats.

The House passed the package by voice vote, avoiding a recorded roll call. Republicans plan to fund ICE separately through budget reconciliation.

The move ends a crisis that caused long airport lines and threatened employee paychecks. - The bill funds TSA, FEMA, and other DHS agencies but zeroes out ICE money.

- House Speaker Mike Johnson conceded after pressure from centrist Republicans. - Conservative hardliners admitted they had no leverage left.

- The shutdown lasted 75 days, the longest in DHS history. The department's funding woes are not fully over, as Republicans will need to secure money for immigration enforcement without Democratic votes.
