The Chula Vista Elementary School District has rescinded layoff notices to 41 teachers after California's revised state budget provided nearly $3 million in additional funding. The district also approved a new contract giving teachers a 1.5% one-time salary increase and increased healthcare contributions.
The revised state budget includes billions in added school funding, restoring post-COVID learning recovery funds and creating new ongoing funding for community schools. Despite the boost, the district still projects a $13.6 million deficit for 2026-27 and expects declining enrollment to shrink its budget by over 1,000 students in three years.
Teachers union president Rosi Martinez expressed excitement about new community school funding that will help lower-income families. The district's improved financial outlook allowed it to also reinstate nearly a dozen school counselors and social workers, though long-term challenges remain.
