California ICE Detention Centers Face Severe Overcrowding and Inhumane Conditions, State Report Finds

30 May 2026 06:30

A California Department of Justice report confirms that overcrowding at seven ICE detention facilities has led to inadequate medical care, poor food and hygiene, and excessive use of force, violating ICE's own standards. - Only 18% of detainees interviewed had seen a doctor for their medical issues; four deaths occurred at Adelanto during the second Trump administration.

- At Otay Mesa, the facility held 1,433 detainees, exceeding its contractual maximum of 1,142, with overflow sleeping on floor mats. - The California City facility opened prematurely with insufficient staff, and detainees reported being left outside without water for hours.

- At least 20 detainees at Desert View Annex went on a hunger strike to protest mold, poor water, and lack of nutritious food. The report underscores systemic failures in private prison-run facilities, with GEO Group operating five of eight centers and a former GEO executive now leading ICE.
