California Governor Newsom Signs Law Restricting Law Enforcement Access to Ballots

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 73, restricting law enforcement access to ballots and election materials. The law takes effect immediately ahead of the June 2 primary.

- The bill was prompted by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco's seizure of over 650,000 ballots. - It prohibits peace officers from interfering with election administration except in urgent health or safety situations.

- Violations can result in civil penalties up to $50,000 and criminal fines with up to three years in jail. - The attorney general will issue guidance to local election workers on responding to law enforcement requests.
