California Courts Strike Down Controversial Santee Sprawl Project for Fifth Time

09 June 2026 05:25

Two California courts have rejected the Fanita Ranch housing project in Santee for the fifth time since 1999. The rulings found the city violated state environmental law and a voter-approved ballot initiative requiring public approval for such developments.

The project would have placed 3,000 homes in wildfire-prone hillsides that have burned 65 times. Environmental groups celebrated the decision, calling it a victory for safety and sustainable planning.
