California Coastal Commission Approves Suicide Prevention Barriers for San Diego-Coronado Bridge

16 June 2026 12:41

The California Coastal Commission has approved an 8-foot steel mesh barrier for the San Diego-Coronado Bridge to prevent suicides, a project years in the making. - Approximately 400 people have died by suicide on the bridge since 1996, and Caltrans estimates 500-550 since it opened in 1969.

- The barrier will be 87% transparent, made of stainless steel mesh, and include wire spikes along the top. - Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 and finish by late 2028, with most work done at night.

The project also includes murals, fencing replacements, and protection for peregrine falcons. Similar barriers on the Golden Gate Bridge reduced suicides by 73%.
