California Bill Targets Hate Speech in Voter Guides

12 June 2026 10:26

California lawmakers have introduced Assembly Bill 1853 to prevent hate speech in official voter guides, following an antisemitic statement by a gubernatorial candidate. The bill would restrict candidate statements to factual information about qualifications and prohibit attacks, false claims, and hate speech.

It gives election officials authority to reject noncompliant content and allows voters to seek enforcement. The bill is a priority for the California Legislative Jewish Caucus and would take effect immediately if passed.
