California Awards $80 Million for Security at Places of Worship After San Diego Mosque Shooting

Governor Gavin Newsom announced $80 million in security grants for 343 nonprofits, including 228 faith-based groups, following the May 18 mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. - The attack killed three men: security guard Amin Abdullah, 51, and worshippers Nadir Awad, 57, and Mansour Kaziha, 78.

- Abdullah's actions prevented the shooters from reaching 140 children inside the mosque. - An additional $40 million is proposed for ongoing support to high-risk organizations.

- Victim compensation is available for medical costs, mental health care, lost wages, and funeral expenses.
