5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern California, Followed by Aftershocks

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California early Wednesday morning, followed by a 4.5 aftershock and a 3.8 tremor. The USGS reported the quake was centered 40 miles west of Petrolia.

ShakeAlert warnings were issued for the region. No tsunami threat or major damage has been reported.

- The main 5.1 quake occurred at about 5:45 a.m. off Petrolia.

- A 4.5 aftershock followed at 6:11 a.m. off Ferndale.

- A 3.8 tremor was recorded around 8:50 a.m. - ShakeAlert messages urged residents to drop, cover, and hold on.

Residents from Westport to Blue Lake reported feeling the quake. The Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group noted additional seismic activity earlier in the morning, including a 5.7 offshore near the Oregon border.
