A 91-year-old man died after being attacked by hundreds of bees at his home in West Covina, authorities reported. The incident occurred when the victim accidentally disturbed a beehive on his property, triggering a massive swarm.
According to the West Covina Police Department, emergency responders were dispatched to the residence after receiving reports of a bee attack. Upon arrival, they found the elderly man covered in stings and in critical condition.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police said the man was working in his yard when he inadvertently disturbed the hive. Hundreds of bees emerged and began stinging him repeatedly.
Neighbors reported hearing screams and seeing a large cloud of bees before emergency services arrived.
Beekeepers were called to the scene to remove the hive and ensure the area was safe. Authorities are urging residents to be cautious around beehives and to contact professional exterminators or beekeepers for removal rather than attempting to handle them themselves.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office is conducting an investigation into the death. No further details have been released at this time.
